Ria’s experiences in law school shaped an interest in intellectual property law. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Ria went to work at Wells Fargo as a systems analyst where she communicated between technology driven development teams and business analysts. As such, it was crucial that she was able to understand key technical details and translate them to layman’s terms nontechnical personnel. Ria’s early role as a translator played a key part in helping her realize she thoroughly enjoyed the process of communicating fascinating technical details to broader audiences.

As a registered patent attorney, Ria says she loves taking part in the process of helping innovators gain exclusionary rights over their innovations, in part by translating their ideas for legal audiences.

Beyond work, Ria is deeply interested in contributing to her community and committed to the ideals of diversity and equity. In 2015, she founded a student-run coalition called Hindus Against Casteism — whose premise was to raise awareness to caste-based discrimination. The inspiration for the group was absolutely person: her immigrant parents, who originally hail from India, belong to two different faiths. The discrimination and adversity they faced was extensive, and case discrimination is a significant problem among South Asians both in the homeland and diaspora alike.

In her free time, Ria enjoys spending time with her adorably rambunctious twin toddler nieces or going on walks with her perpetually hungry, playful mini-labradoodle. She also enjoys discovering new restaurants in the Twin Cities area: “It is, sadly, a rather expensive hobby,” Ria says
