Kyle Doerrler is an associate with Patterson Thuente IP and a member of the firm’s IP Litigation Team. He handles patent drafting and prosecution for clients with software-related innovations, from network security and encryption to medical device telemetry. With a diverse background in software and network security, he provides value to the firm’s clients by navigating subject matter eligibility rejections and distinguishing nuanced elements of software from prior art; moreover, this helps clients to maximize patentability coverage.
Kyle also conducts patentability and freedom to operate searches, develops strategies for Office Action responses, and prepares claim charts and IP portfolio summaries for clients. His litigation experience allows him to look at patents from an enforceability perspective.
- Conducted an independent patent portfolio analysis for capital management firm considering funding litigation. Presented claim charts and oral report for the client based on infringement position of various patents
- Prepared appeal and reply briefs in preparation for oral hearings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board in prosecution of mechanical/physics-based aspects of client’s patent; Won a full reversal of the Examiner’s rejections on grounds that Examiner failed to present a prima facie case of obviousness.

Several experiences working as an intern for Fortune 100 companies have provided Kyle experience in development of both products and applications. As an Optum Security Analyst under UnitedHealth Group he worked with the ethical hacking team to identify and overcome system vulnerabilities. Additionally, he improved operational effectiveness by implementing task automation for various teams’ workflows. As a Data Processing Specialist with 3M Oral Care Solutions Division R&D, Kyle conducted coding research on digital orthodontics technology. This research improved the effectiveness of the algorithm parsing incoming camera data, leading to a more streamlined user experience for the device.
